Sarfaraz has not played a Test since November 2024. His last appearance came against New Zealand at the Wankhede Stadium, at the end of a peculiar series that encapsulated both the promise and uncertainty surrounding his early international career. In Bengaluru, he followed a first-innings duck with a magnificent 150 — his maiden Test century. His next four innings produced 11, 9, 0 and 1. He consequently left his first spell in Test cricket with 371 runs from six matches at 37.10, including a hundred and three fifties.

He remained with the squad in Australia without playing and was then omitted when India selected their Test party for England in 2025. Karun Nair was among those preferred as India rebuilt their batting group. Selection chairman Ajit Agarkar acknowledged at the time that such decisions could appear harsh, but Sarfaraz was outside the senior squad nonetheless. What followed over the next year is best understood through numbers.

From run-machine to a more complete batting case

Sarfaraz’s first response came in England itself. Playing for India A against England Lions at Canterbury shortly after his senior-team omission, he made 92 from 119 balls. It was an innings of substance in conditions that offered a useful counterpoint to the familiar criticism that much of his enormous first-class record had been constructed on Indian pitches. He then made 101 from 76 balls in the intra-squad game at Beckenham. It did not count towards his official first-class record, but it strengthened a pattern: exclusion had not been followed by stagnation.

Back in India, Sarfaraz accelerated further. At the Buchi Babu tournament, he struck 138 from 114 balls against TNCA XI, including 10 fours and six sixes. Another century followed in his next appearance — 111 from 112 balls against Haryana.

There was also a physical transformation accompanying the runs. Sarfaraz reportedly shed approximately 17kg through a stringent fitness and dietary programme. It was a significant intervention for a player whose conditioning had repeatedly formed part of the public discussion around his selection.

The 2025-26 Ranji Trophy, however, offers a useful warning against turning his comeback into an artificially neat tale of uninterrupted dominance. His first five innings of the competition brought 42, 32, 1, 15 and 5 not out — 95 runs without a fifty.

Eventually came the innings that transformed his season. Against Hyderabad, Sarfaraz made 227 from 219 balls, striking 19 fours and nine sixes. He finished the Ranji campaign with 429 runs at 53.62 and a strike rate of 75.13.

There is an important piece of context hidden inside those numbers: 227 of his 429 runs, or 52.9 per cent, came in that single innings. His Ranji season, therefore, was not a procession of huge scores. It was instead another demonstration of the quality that has defined his first-class career — once Sarfaraz gets through the door, his capacity to turn an innings into something enormous remains unusual.

The more intriguing development occurred elsewhere. In the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, Sarfaraz scored 329 runs from seven innings at an average of 65.80. Those runs required only 162 balls. His strike rate was 203.08, and he registered one century and three fifties.

Then came the Vijay Hazare Trophy: 303 runs from five completed innings, an average of 75.75 and a strike rate of 190.56. He faced only 159 deliveries across the tournament while striking 25 fours and 21 sixes.

Against Punjab, he reached fifty from 15 balls, the fastest List A half-century by an Indian, before finishing with 62 from 20. Taken together, his two principal domestic white-ball competitions produced a remarkable equation: 632 runs from 321 balls.

That works out to 196.9 runs per 100 deliveries across the two tournaments. Add his 429 Ranji runs and Sarfaraz accumulated 1,061 runs across India’s three principal domestic competitions in 2025-26. More revealingly, 632 of those runs — 59.6 per cent — came in white-ball cricket.

For a player historically characterised as a prodigious red-ball accumulator, that is perhaps the most consequential statistic of the comeback. Even his return to the IPL carried the same theme. Chennai Super Kings bought him for ₹75 lakh for 2026, and although his final output was a modest 161 runs from seven innings, those runs came at a strike rate of 169.47.

Sarfaraz has therefore not returned to India’s Test squad merely by recreating the version of himself that originally forced the selectors to notice him. He has lost considerable weight, produced runs in England, endured another uneven Ranji campaign before making a fifth first-class double-century, and dramatically expanded the pace at which he can score. His domestic white-ball strike rates of 203.08 and 190.56 are almost incongruous beside the old caricature of Sarfaraz as simply a heavy-scoring first-class specialist.

Sudharsan’s injury created the vacancy. What Sarfaraz did over the preceding year ensured that, when one finally appeared, his name remained impossible to ignore.

Jasprit Bumrah’s latest injury did not arrive while he was sending down another punishing Test spell. It was an impact injury sustained while fielding during the second ODI against England in Cardiff. The initial diagnosis did not sound alarming. The BCCI reported reactive swelling in his left knee, which ruled him out of the series decider. Bumrah had bowled 19 overs across the first two ODIs, taking 2/76 at an economy rate of exactly 4.00.

Yet more than two weeks later, the discomfort remained. Bumrah could not secure final fitness clearance following rehabilitation at the BCCI Centre of Excellence and was withdrawn from India’s two-Test tour of Sri Lanka. Auqib Nabi replaced him in the squad.

The immediate temptation is to count another series lost to injury. Bumrah has already missed major tournaments, overseas Tests and entire IPL seasons during a career repeatedly interrupted by physical setbacks.

The more revealing data, however, lies in what has happened after those absences. Bumrah’s injury history contains both successful comebacks and one disastrous false start. Together, they offer India a clear warning: the length of his rehabilitation has rarely damaged his bowling. Returning before his body was ready has.

The comeback that went wrong

The defining example came in 2022. After suffering back spasms during the England tour, Bumrah missed the Asia Cup and spent nearly two months away from international cricket. He was brought back for the home T20I series against Australia as India attempted to prepare him for the T20 World Cup.

He played only two matches. His combined figures were 1/73 from six overs, producing an average of 73.00, an economy rate of 12.17 and a strike rate of 36 balls per wicket. He then experienced further back pain, missed the South Africa series and was ruled out of the World Cup.

India tried again in January 2023. Bumrah was added to the ODI squad against Sri Lanka after being declared fit, only to be withdrawn because his body required more time to develop “bowling resilience”. He eventually underwent back surgery in March.

That sequence remains the statistical trap India must avoid. The two-match comeback did not prove that Bumrah had lost his skill. It proved that passing an initial fitness assessment was not the same as being capable of repeatedly absorbing international bowling loads. The failed return cost him almost another year.

Longer rehabilitation, stronger Bumrah

When Bumrah finally returned against Ireland in August 2023, his numbers immediately looked different. He took 2/24 in his first match and 2/15 in his second. His series return was four wickets at 9.75, while conceding fewer than five runs per over. In his second game, he even delivered a wicket-maiden in the final over.

That was only the beginning. At the 2023 ODI World Cup, Bumrah claimed 20 wickets at an average of 18.65 and an economy rate of 4.06. At the 2024 T20 World Cup, he took 15 wickets at 8.26 while conceding only 4.17 runs per over, earning the Player of the Tournament award as India won the title.

His Test numbers were even more extreme. Bumrah took 71 wickets in 13 Tests during 2024 at an average of 14.92 and a strike rate of 30.1. The next-highest wicket-taker that year, Gus Atkinson, finished 19 wickets behind him. In Australia, Bumrah collected 32 wickets at 13.06 despite India losing the series.

The surgery did not return a reduced version of Bumrah. Statistically, it produced an even more destructive one. Before his August 2023 return, Bumrah had taken 128 wickets in 30 Tests—4.27 wickets per match. Since returning, he has added 106 wickets in 22 Tests—4.82 per match.

His wicket-taking rate per Test has therefore increased by approximately 13%.

The same improvement appears in T20Is. Before the comeback, Bumrah had 70 wickets from 60 matches, or 1.17 per appearance. He has since taken 51 in 35, increasing that rate to 1.46 wickets per match—an improvement of nearly 25%. The calculations are based on his pre-return record and current official career totals of 234 Test, 151 ODI and 121 T20I wickets.

Even his slower returns have worked. Not every comeback has delivered instant wickets.

Following a lower-back stress fracture in 2019, Bumrah went wicketless across all three ODIs in New Zealand. The absence initially appeared to have disrupted his rhythm. Later that year, however, he took 27 wickets in IPL 2020.

After the back problem suffered in Sydney in January 2025, Bumrah spent 93 days without competitive cricket. He returned with 0/29 from four overs for the Mumbai Indians, but finished IPL 2025 with 18 wickets at 17.56 and an economy rate of 6.68. He then took 14 wickets in three Tests in England, including two five-wicket hauls.

The trend is consistent. Bumrah does not always dominate in his first match back, but completed rehabilitation has generally been followed by elite output. The 2018 thumb fracture provided the most dramatic immediate return: 7/122 in the Trent Bridge Test, including 5/85 in the second innings, as India won by 203 runs.

The 2019 return required competitive overs. The 2023 return produced the finest sustained phase of his career. The 2025 return began quietly before developing into another productive season.

Only the rushed 2022 comeback ended in an immediate relapse. That is why the current decision matters. The knee problem is different from the recurring lower-back injury that required surgery, and it originated from an impact while fielding rather than accumulated bowling stress. But persistent discomfort is itself meaningful data.

India are not merely protecting Bumrah from missing two Tests in Sri Lanka. They are protecting the bowler who currently owns 234 Test wickets at 19.79 and has taken almost half of those wickets since returning from major back surgery. The real data trap would be measuring the cost of the matches Bumrah misses now while ignoring the far greater cost of bringing him back one match too early.

Saransh Jain’s maiden India call-up at 33 was the surprise in the squad for the two-Test tour of Sri Lanka. It was also another marker of how India’s Test selection has changed under Gautam Gambhir.

With Washington Sundar unavailable for the opening Test, India needed an off-spinner. They chose Jain, whose first-class record reads 2,223 runs at 31.75 and 188 wickets at 27.30 from 54 matches. He has two centuries, 14 fifties and 10 five-wicket hauls. His most recent Sri Lankan audition captured precisely what the current management appears to value. Jain scored an unbeaten 70 and took six wickets for India A in the second unofficial Test at Galle. He was not selected merely as an off-spinner. His ability to lengthen the batting order strengthened his case.

That preference has become increasingly visible under Gambhir: one player filling two roles, batting stretching to No. 8 and secondary skills influencing selection decisions traditionally determined by a player’s primary discipline. A match-by-match analysis of India’s Test XIs under the last four head coaches shows that Gambhir has used functional all-rounders more frequently than his immediate predecessors.

Players were counted only when they were expected to make a meaningful contribution with both bat and ball. The list includes Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Hardik Pandya, Jayant Yadav, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Shardul Thakur, Nitish Kumar Reddy and Manav Suthar.

Across 20 Tests under Gambhir, these players have occupied 51 of India’s 220 available positions in the playing XI.

That is 23.2% of all selections and an average of 2.55 all-rounders per Test. India have fielded at least two all-rounders in every Test under Gambhir. Three have been selected in 11 of the 20 matches, meaning 55% of his Test XIs have contained three functional all-rounders.

Under Rahul Dravid, the corresponding average was 2.33 across 24 Tests. It was 1.81 across 43 Tests under Ravi Shastri and 2.12 in 17 Tests under Anil Kumble. Gambhir’s figure is 9.4% higher than Dravid’s and nearly 41% higher than Shastri’s.

More all-rounders, fewer victories

The most revealing difference is not the overall average, but where India have used these players. Dravid’s teams averaged 2.69 all-rounders per home Test and 1.91 outside India or at neutral venues. Under Shastri, the split was 2.20 at home and 1.61 away. Under Kumble, it was 2.31 and 1.50.

Gambhir’s India have averaged 2.60 all-rounders across 10 home Tests and 2.50 across 10 matches in Australia and England. The difference between home and away usage is only 0.10. Under Dravid, it was 0.78; under Shastri, 0.59; and under Kumble, 0.81.

Gambhir has effectively exported India’s home formula overseas. India fielded three all-rounders in the final two Tests in Australia and in three consecutive matches in England. Gambhir has done so in five of his 10 overseas Tests. Dravid did not select three functional all-rounders in any of his 11 Tests outside India or at a neutral venue.

The philosophy has not produced comparable results. India’s record under Gambhir stands at eight wins, 10 defeats and two draws from 20 Tests. Their win percentage is 40, while their win-loss ratio is 0.80. Among India’s last four coaches, Gambhir is the only one under whom the team have lost more Tests than they have won.

Dravid finished with 14 wins and seven defeats from 24 Tests. Shastri oversaw 25 victories and 13 losses in 43. Kumble’s India won 12 and lost only one of 17 Tests.

The decline at home is particularly damaging. India have won five and lost five of their 10 home Tests under Gambhir. That is a 50% home defeat rate. Under Dravid, India lost two of 13 home Tests. Shastri and Kumble suffered only one home defeat each during their tenures.

The series sequence tells the story: India beat Bangladesh 2-0, were swept 3-0 by New Zealand, lost 3-1 in Australia, drew 2-2 in England, defeated West Indies 2-0, were swept 2-0 by South Africa and then beat Afghanistan in a one-off Test. Across six multi-Test series, India have won two, lost three and drawn one. The two series victories came at home against Bangladesh and West Indies.

New Zealand ended India’s 12-year unbeaten home-series run. South Africa then became the second visiting side in 13 months to complete a clean sweep. The 408-run defeat in Guwahati was also India’s heaviest by runs in Test cricket.

India were ranked second with 120 rating points before Gambhir’s appointment. They have since slipped to fourth with 104. They also began his tenure leading the 2023-25 World Test Championship standings with 68.52% of the available points, but failed to reach the final. In the current cycle, India are fifth with 48.15%.

The all-rounder-heavy strategy cannot be blamed for every defeat. India have undergone a batting transition, managed injuries and lost several experienced players. But the numbers show that greater flexibility has not translated into greater security.

Jain deserves his selection on domestic performance. The wider concern is whether India’s obsession with covering two roles through one player is weakening the primary skills required to win Tests.

Under Gambhir, India are increasingly assembled like a T20 side. The results suggest that Test cricket has not always rewarded the compromise.

The noise around Rohit Sharma had gathered quickly. Two subdued innings in England, an 11-match wait for an ODI hundred and questions over whether a 39-year-old batter still belonged in India’s plans for the 2027 World Cup had turned the series-decider at Lord’s into an examination of his future.

Rohit’s answer was 138 from 110 balls, containing 17 fours and five sixes, in a chase of 388. He added 147 with Shubman Gill and kept India within sight until the 39th over. India eventually fell 27 runs short, but the innings ended the debate in the most Rohit-like manner possible: not by producing just enough, but by producing something enormous.

That has been the recurring rhythm of his ODI career. Rohit does not possess a mechanical pattern in which three failures are automatically followed by a century. Many of his hundreds arrived when he was already in excellent touch. The deeper pattern is that whenever uncertainty has threatened to define him, he has repeatedly answered through reinvention - often on a far larger scale than an ordinary return to form.

Rohit Sharma’s rebounds have rarely been small

The first comeback was not a single innings. It was the reconstruction of his ODI career. Rohit scored only 168 runs at 12.92 in 2012, after years without a permanent middle-order role. MS Dhoni’s decision to promote him to open in 2013 changed everything. Of Rohit’s 34 ODI centuries, 32 have now come as an opener. A career once associated with unrealised promise became one of the greatest produced by a white-ball opener.

The scale of his centuries explains why his recoveries feel emphatic. Rohit’s 34 ODI hundreds have produced 4,649 runs between them, an average century score of 136.74. Exactly 17, half of them, have gone beyond 130. Eight have reached 150, and three have become double-centuries. His 264 against Sri Lanka remains the highest individual score in ODI history, while no other batter has scored more than one ODI double.

That 264 was itself a comeback innings. Rohit had been out of international cricket with an injury before returning against Sri Lanka at Eden Gardens in November 2014. A fluent fifty would have represented a successful re-entry. Rohit, instead, hammered 264, struck 33 fours and nine sixes, and set a world record that still stands.

South Africa in 2018 supplied another clear example. Rohit began the six-match series with scores of 20, 15, 0 and 5 - only 40 runs from four innings. In the fifth ODI, he responded with 115, anchoring India to 274 before the bowlers completed a 73-run victory. The result secured India’s first bilateral ODI series win in South Africa.

The pattern returned in Cuttack in February 2025. Rohit entered the second ODI against England after averaging less than 11 across his previous 16 international innings. He reached his hundred from 76 balls and finished with 119 from 90, hitting 12 fours and seven sixes as India chased 305 and sealed the series.

Lord’s belonged to the same tradition. Rohit had made 11 and a laboured 26 in the opening two matches, while reports suggested the third ODI could become his last. India’s management publicly backed him, and batting coach Sitanshu Kotak predicted that Lord’s might witness a “completely different innings”. Rohit delivered precisely that.

There is another revealing layer to Rohit’s record: the bigger the bilateral occasion, the greater his capacity to expand. Rohit has scored centuries in four ODIs that directly decided a series - 209 against Australia in 2013, 147 against New Zealand in 2017, 119 against Australia in 2020 and 138 against England at Lord’s. Across those innings, he amassed 613 runs at an average of 153.25 and a strike rate of 114.79. India won three.

Those numbers do not prove that every quiet sequence will inevitably end in a hundred. What they establish is a rare capacity to turn pressure into scale. His career has been built on repeated escalation: from an uncertain middle-order batter to a prolific opener; from an injury layoff to 264; from four failures in South Africa to a series-winning hundred; from a prolonged slump to a 76-ball century; from retirement speculation to 138 at Lord’s.

At 39, the latest hundred carried particular weight because age had not reduced his response to mere endurance. He still attacked pace, cleared the boundary five times and scored quickly enough to make a chase of 388 feel possible. His future will be decided by what he continues to produce, not by the scale of his past.

Yet, Lord’s reinforced the strongest positive argument in his favour. Rohit Sharma has never specialised in modest answers. When doubt has closed around him, his most characteristic response has been to go bigger.

Comparisons between Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and Sachin Tendulkar became inevitable the moment the 15-year-old replaced Tendulkar as India’s youngest men’s international cricketer. Yet their first international steps reveal how misleading a straight numerical comparison can be - and how quickly Tendulkar demonstrated that he belonged at the highest level.

Tendulkar made his Test debut against Pakistan in Karachi in November 1989, aged 16 years and 205 days. Sooryavanshi debuted in a T20I against England at 15 years and 99 days.

One entered international cricket against a Pakistan attack featuring Imran Khan, Wasim Akram, Abdul Qadir and debutant Waqar Younis. The other was handed perhaps the most unforgiving role in modern white-ball cricket: opening the batting in England with instructions to attack from the beginning.

The difference in formats is considerable. Tendulkar had time to settle, defend and construct an innings. Sooryavanshi is expected to maximise the powerplay, where even a brief stay can be considered successful if it produces rapid runs.

Even after accounting for that difference, however, the early numbers produce a clear conclusion. Tendulkar’s first breakthrough arrived almost immediately. Sooryavanshi has so far offered only brief demonstrations of his hitting ability.

Tendulkar built innings; Vaibhav has only produced starts

Tendulkar scored 15 from 24 balls on debut in Karachi, bowled by Waqar with India already under pressure. It was an unremarkable beginning, particularly when separated from everything that followed.

The wait for substance lasted only one more innings. In the second Test at Faisalabad, Tendulkar made 59 from 172 deliveries. He batted for more than four hours and added 143 with Sanjay Manjrekar after India had slipped to 101 for four.

It was not a spectacular innings by the standards of the career Tendulkar would eventually build. In the context of a 16-year-old playing his second international match against Pakistan, it was extraordinary evidence of concentration and temperament.

His first six Test innings read: 15, 59, 8, 41, 35 and 57. That gave him 215 runs at an average of 35.83, with two half-centuries. More significantly, Tendulkar crossed 35 four times in six innings. His opening series was therefore not built around one isolated score surrounded by failures. It contained repeated evidence that he could survive long periods and respond to one of the most demanding bowling attacks in world cricket.

The 57 in Sialkot strengthened that impression. Tendulkar was struck on the face by a Waqar bouncer but continued batting as India attempted to save the Test. The innings became symbolic because of the physical courage involved, but it was also another technically important contribution.

By the end of his first series, the question was no longer whether Tendulkar had been selected too early. It was how quickly his ability would develop into match-defining performances.

Sooryavanshi’s first three international innings have produced 14 from 10 balls, 13 from five and 15 from 10. His aggregate stands at 42 runs from 25 deliveries, an average of 14 and a strike rate of 168.

The strike rate shows that he has not been paralysed by the occasion. He has found boundaries, attacked established bowlers and remained faithful to the method that carried him into the Indian side.

But none of his innings has lasted beyond ten deliveries. That is the most revealing comparison. Tendulkar faced 172 balls in his first breakthrough innings alone. Sooryavanshi has faced only 25 deliveries across his entire international career.

Tendulkar’s 59 therefore contained almost seven times as many balls as Vaibhav has encountered across three innings combined. This does not mean Sooryavanshi must start batting like a Test-match middle-order player. India have not selected him to absorb 100 deliveries. They want him to create immediate powerplay damage.

A score of 40 from 22 balls could represent a major breakthrough for Sooryavanshi, even though it would look modest beside Tendulkar’s patient Faisalabad half-century.

But the next developmental step is still obvious. Sooryavanshi has shown that he can hit international bowlers. He must now remain at the crease long enough to influence an international match.

The expectations around him are understandable. He arrived after scoring 175 from 80 balls in the 2026 Under-19 World Cup final and had already established himself as one of the most explosive young batters in the game.

His rise was based on performances, including an extraordinary IPL season, rather than merely the fascination surrounding his age. He did not reach the senior side because India wanted to experiment with a teenager. He forced the selectors to consider him through the scale and speed of his run-scoring.

That pedigree can also create impatience. Because Sooryavanshi has already produced several astonishing innings at junior and franchise level, three small international scores can appear more concerning than they really are. In reality, 25 deliveries are too small a sample to judge any batter, particularly one learning how international attacks respond after identifying his preferred scoring areas.

Tendulkar’s first clear break was the 59 in his second international innings. The Sialkot 57 then confirmed that the Faisalabad performance had not been a one-off.

His unbeaten 119 against England at Old Trafford in August 1990 represented the next stage. That innings, scored in his ninth Test, saved India and delivered the first of his 100 international centuries. Sooryavanshi has not reached the first of those stages yet. His opening sequence has demonstrated intent without control and impact without duration.

The comparison should therefore neither diminish Vaibhav nor pretend that their beginnings are equal. Tendulkar proved remarkably early that he could survive, adapt and construct an innings. Sooryavanshi has shown that he can strike at the international level.

His first genuine breakthrough will arrive when those qualities meet - when the early aggression survives the opposition’s counterattack, and 14 becomes 40, 60 or something considerably larger.

As MS Dhoni turns 45 today, the noise around his legacy remains almost as loud as the roar that followed him through the best years of Indian cricket. Few cricketers have been loved with such intensity. Even fewer have been criticised with such stubbornness. In Dhoni’s case, both emotions often come from the same place: he became too large to be discussed normally.

That is why every birthday tribute to him eventually runs into the same counter-arguments. He was lucky. He had great players. He took too many games deep. He was not technically pure. His legacy is built more on nostalgia than substance.

The problem with these arguments is not that Dhoni was flawless. He was not. His overseas Test captaincy had major cracks. His late-career batting, especially after his peak years, was open to criticism. The cult around him has often made balanced discussion difficult.

But reducing Dhoni to luck, PR or borrowed greatness is not analysis. It is selective memory.

The PR myth collapses before the numbers

The easiest attack on Dhoni is that his legacy has been inflated by emotion. The numbers say otherwise. Dhoni finished his international career with 17,266 runs, 538 matches for India and 829 dismissals across formats. He scored 10,773 runs in ODIs at an average above 50, while batting for most of his career in the middle and lower-middle order. He was not enjoying the luxury of batting in the top order, collecting overs, settling in and controlling innings from the top. His job was usually messier: rebuild, calculate, absorb pressure, finish.

Then there is the trophy cabinet. Dhoni remains the only captain to win the T20 World Cup, the ODI World Cup and the Champions Trophy. Add five IPL titles as captain, and the argument that his greatness exists only because of nostalgia becomes very thin. PR can polish a legacy. It cannot manufacture one of this weight.

Luck does not keep repeating for a decade

The “lucky captain” tag has followed Dhoni for years because some of his biggest calls looked outrageous before they worked. Joginder Sharma in the 2007 T20 World Cup final. Promoting himself ahead of Yuvraj Singh in the 2011 World Cup final. Backing unlikely overs, unusual fields and odd match-ups when the situation demanded something different.

But one gamble working can be luck. A decade of decisions working across formats, tournaments and dressing rooms points to something deeper.

Dhoni captained India in more than 300 international matches. He led India through different eras, different dressing-room personalities, different formats and different pressures. His white-ball captaincy was not built on textbook aggression. It was built on patience, role clarity and emotional control.

His genius was not that every decision worked. It was that he understood pressure better than most. He trusted players at moments when others would have hidden them. He knew that in knockout cricket, the obvious move is not always the best move. Sometimes the brave call is not the loud call. Sometimes it is the one only the captain has the nerve to make.

Calling that luck is convenient. Calling it judgement is more honest.

The not-out merchant myth misses the role completely

The “selfish not-out merchant” criticism is perhaps the most popular modern attack on Dhoni. It also reveals a misunderstanding of what a finisher is supposed to do.

Dhoni remained not out 84 times in ODIs. Critics use that as if it proves selfishness. But in successful ODI chases, he was almost absurdly effective: 2,876 runs, an average above 100, and 47 not-outs in Indian wins. Out of his 50 ODI not-outs while chasing, India won 47.

That is not stat-padding. That is job completion.

A top-order batter staying not out in a losing cause can be accused of self-preservation. A No.5 or No.6 batter staying not out in successful chases is doing exactly what the role demands. Dhoni’s method was not always pretty. He often absorbed dots, dragged the game deep and made fans nervous. But for much of his prime, the calculation had a brutal logic: take the chase as far as possible, keep wickets in hand, identify the bowler to attack, and finish before panic reached the dressing room.

The fair criticism is that this method lost some bite in his later years. Post-2015 Dhoni was no longer the same destroyer. His strike rotation slowed. His finishing powers faded. There were chases where he left too much too late. But that decline cannot be used to erase the player who made finishing an Indian art form.

Technique is not the same as effectiveness

Dhoni was never a purist’s dream. His batting had hard hands, bottom-hand power and movements that did not belong in coaching manuals. His wicketkeeping was similarly unconventional. He did not glide like a classical keeper. He stabbed, snapped, improvised and somehow completed dismissals before batters understood they were in danger. That is precisely why the “bad technique” argument is weak.

Technique is not about looking correct. Technique is about producing repeatable results under pressure. Dhoni’s batting gave India one of the greatest ODI finishers in history. His keeping produced more than 800 international dismissals. His stumpings became a genre of their own: quick, ruthless and almost invisible until the replay exposed the victim.

He was not technically pure. He was technically personal. He built a method around his hands, strength, game awareness and calm. It looked strange because it belonged only to him.

Cricket history has many elegant players who could not own the moment. Dhoni often owned the moment without looking elegant at all.

Great players helped him, but he was not carried by them

Every great captain has great players. Ricky Ponting had legends. Clive Lloyd had legends. Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Sourav Ganguly and Kapil Dev all led teams with serious talent. So the question is not whether Dhoni had great players. Of course he did.

The real question is whether he maximised them. In 2007, he led a young Indian side to the T20 World Cup when the format itself was still new. In 2011, India had a brilliant squad, but Dhoni’s 91 not out in the final was not a passenger’s contribution. He walked in at 114 for 3, changed the match tempo, built a decisive stand with Gautam Gambhir and finished the chase himself. In 2013, after Indian cricket had entered a transition phase, he still led the side to the Champions Trophy.

Great players gave Dhoni tools. His greatness was knowing which tool to use when the room was on fire.

That is the heart of his legacy. Not perfection. Not mythology. Not blind worship. Dhoni’s greatness lies in the rare combination of record, temperament, timing and nerve. He was not always the best-looking cricketer on the field, but he was often the clearest thinker in the storm.

On his birthday, that is the part worth remembering. The myth around Dhoni may be loud, but the evidence is louder.

Ben Stokes did not leave Test cricket with the clean statistical shape of a Jacques Kallis, Ian Botham or Kapil Dev. That is precisely what makes his numbers interesting. His retirement after England’s series defeat to New Zealand closes a career not defined by one neat column, but by the strain of carrying several at once.

The headline figure is rare enough. Stokes finished with 7,273 Test runs and 252 wickets, making him only the second player after Kallis to cross both 7,000 runs and 250 wickets in the format. On its own, that club can make the comparison look simple. It is not. Kallis was a giant batter who bowled serious support overs. Stokes was more awkward: a No.6 volume batter, a fourth-seamer workload option and, at his best, a game-breaking cricketer whose impact came in spikes rather than steady dominance.

The numbers show a strange batting profile

The batting numbers make that clear. Stokes Test runs took 220 innings, with nine not-outs, at an average of 34.46. That is not an elite specialist batting average. But judged by role, the weight changes. He averaged 59.6 runs per Test and faced 12,427 balls across his career, or 101.9 balls per match. That is not cameo territory.

His 14 hundreds and 37 fifties mean he crossed 50 in 51 of his 220 innings, a 50-plus rate of 23.2 per cent. His conversion rate, 14 hundreds from 51 scores of fifty or more, sits at 27.5%. In other words, Stokes was not a constant run machine. He was a batter who gave England one major innings roughly every four knocks, and when that came, it often changed the match.

His tempo adds another layer. Stokes finished with 138 sixes, the most in Test history. Spread over 12,427 balls faced, that is one six every 90.1 deliveries. For a player who also had to rebuild innings, absorb pressure and often bat with the lower order, that rate says plenty about his disruptive value. The 258 at Cape Town and the unbeaten 135 at Headingley were not statistical accidents. They were extreme examples of a career pattern: long periods of grind, followed by violent release.

The bowling record is equally easy to misread. Stokes was not a Botham-level bowling all-rounder. He took 252 wickets at 30.98, with six five-wicket hauls and no ten-wicket match. But he was also not a luxury part-timer. He bowled 14,085 balls, equal to 2,347.5 overs. Across 122 Tests, that works out to 19.2 overs per match. Across his 182 bowling innings, it is 12.9 overs per innings. That is a genuine workload. Not frontline fast-bowler workload, but enough to alter team balance, protect combinations and give England tactical flexibility.

The best number to understand Stokes is not his average with bat or ball. It is workload. Add his 12,427 balls faced to his 14,085 balls bowled, and the total is 26,512 direct Test deliveries. That is 217.3 balls per Test in which Stokes was either batting or bowling, before fielding, catches, captaincy and physical wear are even counted. Converted into overs, that is 4,418.7 overs of direct involvement, or 36.2 overs per Test. For a player with knee, hamstring and long-term body issues, the scale of that burden explains the retirement better than sentiment does.

There is also a contradiction in the ending. The familiar image of Stokes is the miracle batter, but his final phase leaned more towards the ball. His last year included 34 Test wickets at 25, which accounts for 13.5% of his career wickets. Two of his six five-wicket hauls also came in that period, meaning one-third of his Test five-fors arrived in his final year. The bat, by contrast, had dimmed. The result is a strange closing chapter: Stokes left as a more effective bowler than batter, even though his most famous memories will be batting epics. That is why the numbers do not make Stokes smaller. They make him harder to box. He was not Kallis, because he did not produce top-order batting certainty. He was not Botham, because he did not take wickets at that volume or average. He was not Flintoff either, because his batting output was far larger. Stokes’ statistical legacy sits in the uncomfortable space between those models: 7,273 runs, 252 wickets, 26,512 direct balls, 138 sixes, and a career built less on consistency than on repeated high-stress intervention.

The retirement, then, is not just the end of an England captaincy era. It is the removal of a rare mathematical balance from the Test side. England have lost a batter, a bowler, a captain and a tactical shortcut in one body. The numbers show why replacing him will not be about finding one player. It will be about replacing several jobs at once.

When Vaibhav Sooryavanshi bats, the eye is naturally drawn to the violence. The sixes, the strike rates, the audacity, the sheer sense that bowlers are being attacked rather than merely faced is the version of him cricket has quickly fallen in love with. A teenager who can make even established attacks look ordinary will always be sold through highlights first.

But the more revealing story lies beneath those highlights. The most dangerous thing about Sooryavanshi is not simply that he can hit brutally. It is that he does it on top of an already strong base of consistency. The spectacle is obvious. The repeatability is what should worry opponents more. That distinction matters because there is a difference between a batter who occasionally explodes and a batter who keeps giving himself the chance to explode. Vaibhav, increasingly, looks like the second kind.

The consistency hidden behind the hitting

To understand the shape of his rise, look at a clean sample of 30 innings - his 23 IPL innings and seven innings in the 2026 U19 World Cup.

Across those 30 innings, Vaibhav has already produced:

• 12 scores of 50 or more

• 7 scores of 75 or more

• 6 scores of 90 or more

• 3 centuries

Those numbers immediately change the conversation. This is not a case of a young batter surviving on a handful of freakish knocks. A player who reaches fifty 12 times in 30 innings is not just dangerous; he is repeatedly entering positions from which games can be taken away. A 40 percent fifty-plus rate across IPL cricket and a global age-group tournament is not the profile of a chaos merchant. It is the profile of someone whose aggression is being underpinned by genuine reliability. And that is what makes Vaibhav’s game so compelling. The image is of risk. The output increasingly suggests control.

In the IPL alone, his record already stands at 23 innings, eight 50-plus scores, six 75-plus scores, five 90-plus scores and two hundreds. Add his U19 World Cup returns - where he made 439 runs in seven innings, including scores of 72, 52, 68 and 175 - and the pattern becomes impossible to dismiss as a short burst of form.

The World Cup final hundred may be the knock everyone remembers, and rightly so. A 175 in a final is the kind of innings that enters cricket folklore. But what gave the innings its real significance was the tournament that came before it. He did not stumble into that moment from nowhere. He arrived there after repeatedly getting in, repeatedly influencing matches, and repeatedly showing that once he survives the initial phase, the innings can tilt very heavily in his favour.

That is the hidden thread through the numbers.

Once he gets going, the innings usually keeps growing

The second layer of the data is what makes the first one even more interesting. Of Vaibhav’s 12 fifty-plus scores across these 30 innings, seven have gone beyond 75, six have gone beyond 90, and three have become centuries.

That means more than half of his fifty-plus scores have moved into the 75-plus bracket. Half have crossed 90. One in every four has become a hundred. For a batter whose game is built on tempo and intimidation, those conversion numbers are striking.

Normally, with highly aggressive batters, the trade-off is clear: they can race to 40 or 50, but they also leave themselves vulnerable to throwing away starts. Vaibhav’s numbers suggest something far more troubling for the opposition. When he gets a start, he often does not waste it. He keeps pushing.

His IPL score distribution captures that perfectly. Of his eight IPL 50-plus scores, only two ended between 50 and 74. One stopped in the 75-89 range. The remaining five moved into either the 90s or three figures.

That is the real warning sign. He does not merely produce cameos that look dramatic on social media. He turns many of his big days into match-shaping days. So the read on Vaibhav should not simply be about brutality. That part is too obvious. Anyone can see it. The better angle - and the deeper one - is that the brutality is hiding something more substantial.

He is becoming consistent. Not in the old-fashioned sense of nudging his way to tidy 42s and 58s, but in the modern, more frightening sense: he keeps getting into the innings, and once he gets into the innings, he has a habit of stretching it into something decisive. That is why the sixes, for all their entertainment, may not even be the most important part of the story. The sixes are the spectacle. The consistency is the threat.

India have not picked a young squad

This is not a straightforward youth reset. India’s squad still retains a strong senior core. Shreyas Iyer is 31. Sanju Samson is 31. Ishan Kishan is 27. Shivam Dube is 32. Axar Patel is 32. Mohammed Siraj is 32. Varun Chakaravarthy is 34. This is not a baby squad. Nor is it a team built solely around fresh faces. India have not discarded experience. They have retained older players where they believe those players continue to add value. And that is what makes the Suryakumar Yadav decision so intriguing.

India did not drop him simply because he is 35. They dropped him because he is a 35-year-old specialist batter who’s out of form and no longer central enough to justify captaincy protection heading into the next cycle. Age alone did not end his run. It merely shortened the patience around his form. For a younger player, a lean patch can still be framed as part of the development process. For an older specialist, the same run of poor scores paints a decline. Selection does not judge age in isolation. It judges age through role, output and future value. That is where SKY lost ground.

Axar survives at 32 because he offers India two disciplines. Varun survives at 34 because mystery spin remains a specialist resource. Siraj survives at 32 because India still need experienced pace options. Dube survives at 32 because he fills a specific spin-hitting role in the middle order. Each offers something that is not easily replicated, while also providing the added value of contributing with the ball.

SKY’s value proposition was narrower. He was a captain and a specialist batter. Once the batting argument weakened, the captaincy alone was never going to be enough.

Numbers made sentiment unsafe

The fall of Suryakumar Yadav appears even starker because the peak was so high. Across 2022 and 2023, SKY was India’s most destructive T20I batter. In 2022, he amassed 1,164 runs at an average of 46.56 and a strike rate of 187.44. He followed that up with 733 runs in 2023 at an average of 48.9. Across those two years, he was not merely scoring quickly. He was redefining how bowling attacks approached the middle overs. But the numbers that followed changed the conversation entirely.

In 2025, SKY managed just 218 runs across 19 T20I innings at an average of 13.63, without registering a single half-century. At the 2026 T20 World Cup, he produced one major innings, an unbeaten 84 in the opener, but followed it with only 158 runs across his next eight outings. The captain was still winning. The batter was fading. India could not ignore that contradiction forever.

IPL 2026 did little to repair the damage. Roughly 270 runs in 13 innings, at an average of nearly 21 and a strike rate of 147, offered occasional flashes but nowhere near the sustained impact needed to reverse a selection trend that was already in motion. That is the brutal standard SKY created for himself. A strike-rate in the high 140s can look perfectly respectable on paper. For SKY, it no longer looked like dominance. It looked like a diminished version of the player who once made 170-plus strike rate seasons feel routine.

India had already voted on 2028

The age question becomes relevant only when viewed through the lens of India’s next T20 cycle. SKY is 35 now. By 2028, he will be around 37. That does not automatically mean he is finished. T20 cricket has long accommodated older players when their role is clear and their output remains elite. But India had to decide whether a 35-year-old specialist batter, already battling a prolonged dip in form, could remain at the centre of their leadership plans through the next cycle.

The answer was no.

Shreyas Iyer’s appointment is therefore about more than a change of captaincy. It is a cycle-management decision. At 31, he is not a youth pick, but he is a bridge. He offers leadership experience, middle-order value and a realistic two-year runway that SKY could no longer provide.

Tilak Varma’s vice-captaincy adds the forward-looking layer. At 23, he is not merely being kept in the XI conversation. He is being positioned close to the levers of power. India have built a succession chain rather than made a single replacement. Shreyas represents the present. Tilak signals the future.

Sooryavanshi’s selection at 15, following a record-breaking IPL season, completes the picture at the other end. His arrival in the same squad announcement that carried SKY’s exit is unlikely to be a coincidence. It is a statement of intent, quiet but unmistakable. India have not chosen youth over experience. They have chosen future value over past authority. SKY did not fail as captain in any conventional sense. India won under him. His leadership earned its credit. But the selectors have surgically separated the captain from the batter, and when they evaluated the batter on his own merits, what they found was no longer enough.

He delivered the trophy. He earned the farewell. But cricket’s great indignity is that winning buys you legacy, not time. By the time the ink had dried on India’s 2026 title, the selectors had already turned the page. SKY won the argument that mattered most to him. India had quietly moved on to the next one.

The question is not whether Vaibhav is the next Sachin. The question is how much cricket has changed since Sachin was first asked to prove that a boy could survive among men.

The old examination

On November 15, 1989, a 16-year-old walked out in Karachi against one of the most hostile pace attacks ever assembled. Sachin Tendulkar scored 15 and was dismissed by Waqar Younis, who was himself on debut. Neither player knew it, but both were about to undergo the same examination: whether their bodies and minds were built for the sharpest men’s cricket on earth.

That examination had a specific character. It demanded endurance. Could a teenager absorb Imran Khan’s aggression, Wasim Akram’s swing and Waqar’s reverse, take a blow to the ribs - which Sachin did, in the fourth Test of that Pakistan series - and still come back to the crease? In year one, 215 runs at 35.83. Year two, 373 at 41.44. Not spectacular numbers. Proof-of-belonging numbers.

The landmark arrived at Old Trafford in August 1990. India chasing 408, the series alive, 109 for four. The 17-year-old scored 119 not out off 189 balls - 17 boundaries, strike rate 62 - and drew the Test. He was not trying to dominate. He was trying to survive. His teenage genius was first confirmed by the right to occupy a crease for hours. That was the currency of the old economy.

The new examination

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s first landmark arrived very differently. On April 28, 2025, aged 14 years and 32 days, he walked out for Rajasthan Royals chasing 210 against Gujarat Titans and scored 101 off 38 balls. The century came off 35 deliveries - second-fastest in IPL history, fastest by an Indian. Of his 101 runs, 94 came from boundaries. He refused to run. The field was irrelevant to the mathematics he was doing.

Nine days earlier, on debut, his first ball in IPL cricket, off Shardul Thakur, went for six. He was 14 years and 23 days old.

By the end of IPL 2025: 252 runs in seven matches, strike rate 206.56. By the end of the league stage IPL 2026: 583 more runs across 14 matches, strike rate of 232.36. Fifty-three sixes in 2026 alone, the second-most by any batter in one edition of the IPL in history. Thirty-seven of those came in the first six overs; no other batter in the competition reached 30. A second century, 103 off 37 against Sunrisers Hyderabad, featuring 12 sixes, the most by an Indian in a single IPL innings. Then 93 off 38 against Lucknow, 88 of those 93 runs from boundaries.

Sachin’s first job was to not look out of place. Vaibhav’s first job is to make the field look outdated.

The real comparison is cricket’s economy

Sachin belonged to a cricket economy built on red-ball validation, national-team pathways and patience-heavy public judgement. His teenage record was measured in averages, not strike rates. There was no auction price to justify. He carried his tenth-grade school textbooks on India’s 1990 England tour. The scrutiny was intense, but it operated on a human timescale.

Vaibhav belongs to a completely different system. His visibility was built inside the IPL. His value is measured in auction efficiency - ₹1.1 crore at auction, 835 IPL runs at a strike rate of nearly 224 in return. He operates inside the Impact Player era, where a 20-ball powerplay burst carries the tactical weight that older cricket reserved for a session of careful accumulation. His public verdict arrives in overs, not innings.

The numbers do not describe two batters of different quality. They describe two batters being asked to prove different things by different sports. Sachin’s proof-point century took 189 balls. Vaibhav’s took 38. Cricket did not merely find another teenage sensation. It changed the definition of one.

The distance

Sachin built his case across four years. The public eventually arrived at certainty about him, but the runway was long. Vaibhav has no such runway. The IPL does not offer one. His examination is not whether he can belong. It is whether he can detonate a match from ball one, every time, against the best T20 bowlers on the planet.

Sachin’s teenage greatness was built on the right to stay. Vaibhav’s is being built on the demand to explode. The distance between those two expectations is the story. It is not Sachin versus Vaibhav. It is old cricket’s patience versus new cricket’s impatience, and the teenager in the middle of it is simply the clearest evidence of how completely the terms have changed.

Klaasen and Bhuvneshwar set the benchmark

Heinrich Klaasen is the clearest batting answer in the tournament. His profile is ruthless: 12 innings, 47.6 average batting impact (by our method), 100% positive-match rate and no bust games. The record becomes sharper because of where Klaasen bats. Middle-order T20 batting offers little comfort. Entry points change, asking rates jump, match-ups tighten, and death-overs hitting can turn one mistake into a ruined contribution. Klaasen has carried that volatility without letting it damage his output.

SRH have received insulation from him. Klaasen has repeatedly protected innings from collapse, pushed them beyond par, or dragged them back into competitive territory. His value sits in the certainty of contribution. Bhuvneshwar Kumar owns the bowling version. Across 13 bowling innings, he has produced a positive impact every time. His average bowling impact stands at 38.7 (by our method). His bust rate is zero.

For a bowler, that cleanliness is rare. Four overs can be damaged by one missed yorker, one bad match-up, and one over where the batter reads everything early. Bhuvneshwar has avoided those holes better than anyone else. He has given RCB control with the new ball, repeatable value through his spell, and almost no damaging returns.

RCB and GT have the deepest reliability structures

RCB’s dependability profile is the most complete among the teams. Bhuvneshwar leads the bowling list. Devdutt Padikkal ranks third among batters with 12 innings, 40.0 average batting impact, 100% positive rate and no bust games. Virat Kohli sits fourth with 13 innings, 42.7 average impact and an 85% positive rate. Rajat Patidar follows close behind with 11 innings, 37.5 average impact, 100% positive rate and no bust games.

That is a rare four-player spine. Padikkal has combined volume with stability. Kohli brings the weight of impact over a larger sample. Patidar gives RCB another batter who keeps returning positive value. Add Bhuvneshwar’s bowling safety, and RCB emerge with the strongest dependability architecture in the league.

GT are close. Shubman Gill sits just behind Klaasen in the batting race, with 12 innings, 47.9 average batting impact, an 83% positive rate and no bust games. Sai Sudarshan reinforces the same pattern across 13 innings, with a 42.1 average impact, an 85% positive rate, and only an 8% bust rate. Jos Buttler adds security with 13 innings, 32.5 average impact, an 85% positive rate and no bust games. GT’s batting has operated with a strong reliability shell. Gill supplies premium output with a clean floor. Sudarshan gives regular scoring weight. Buttler reduces collapse risk. Jason Holder adds another layer with 7 innings, a 37.3 average bowling impact, a 100% positive rate, and no bust games.

Vaibhav has turned risk into repeatable damage

Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s presence near the top of the batting list is the most striking development.

He is RR’s most dependable batter, with 12 innings, a 46.2 batting impact average, a 75% positive rate, and an 8% bust rate. His role is naturally unstable. Rajasthan use him to attack early, bend powerplays, hit sixes and create immediate scoring pressure. Those jobs usually create jagged profiles.

Vaibhav’s numbers have made him more than a thrill pick. His ceiling has been enormous, and his failure rate has remained manageable. For a 15-year-old batter in an aggression-first role, that is a major tournament statement. RR also have Jofra Archer as their most dependable bowler. Archer has 12 innings, 22.8 average bowling impact and a 92% positive rate. His average impact trails the top names, but his regular usefulness has been valuable.

The dependable names reveal each team’s true shape

Sunil Narine remains KKR’s banker. His 11 innings have produced an average bowling impact of 34.6 and a 91% positive rate. Angkrish Raghuvanshi leads KKR’s batting dependability with a 34.7 average impact and an 83% positive rate.

Elsewhere, Sanju Samson and Anshul Kamboj lead CSK’s lists. KL Rahul and Lungi Ngidi top DC’s. Mitchell Marsh and Prince Yadav form LSG's strongest pair. Rohit Sharma leads MI’s batting dependability, while Allah Ghazanfar leads their bowling. PBKS have Cooper Connolly and Arshdeep Singh. SRH have Klaasen carrying the batting standard and Sakib Hussain as their most dependable bowler.

RCB and GT have multiple repeatable pillars. SRH have the best batting pillar. RR have the most fascinating young reliability case. KKR still lean on Narine’s control. Klaasen and Bhuvneshwar stand at the top because they have made excellence feel scheduled. In a tournament designed to punish certainty, they have given their teams the rarest commodity in T20: trust.

Method note

The dependability index measures repeatable impact, not raw runs or wickets alone. Batters were assessed on batting impact, innings sample, positive-match rate, high-impact frequency and low-impact failures. Bowlers were judged on bowling impact, bowling innings, positive-match rate, control value and damaging spells. A “positive match” means the player returned a clear value in that role. A “low-impact failure” means the contribution was poor enough to hurt consistency. Minimum filters were applied to avoid rewarding tiny samples: six innings and 75 balls for batters; six bowling innings and 100 balls for bowlers. All data is up to the end of the 62nd match.

However, the IPL has not rewarded that reputation. The Mumbai Indians are already out after earning only six points from 11 matches. Lucknow Super Giants have also slipped out of the playoff race. Several players who looked decisive at the World Cup have spent the IPL either chasing form, carrying weak numbers, or failing to turn matches in their franchises’ favour.

Mumbai’s World Cup core has collapsed together

The strongest thread runs through the Mumbai Indians. Their season has been hurt by several high-profile players failing simultaneously. Suryakumar’s case is central because of the contrast between status and output. He came into the league as the captain who had led India to the T20 World Cup title. He had also made 242 runs in nine matches during the tournament, giving India both presence and tempo through the batting order. IPL 2026 has been much thinner. His first-ball duck against Royal Challengers Bengaluru pushed his tally to 195 runs in 11 matches at an average of 17.73, his poorest IPL average since 2017.

For a batter of his range, that is a major drop. Suryakumar is picked to change the pace of an innings. Mumbai needed him to control the middle overs, attack spin, and pull chases back from awkward positions. Instead, his season has remained stuck in starts, soft exits and pressure innings that have not opened up. When a player with his reputation averages below 20 across 11 games, the damage spreads beyond one batting slot.

Jasprit Bumrah’s numbers are even sharper. In the World Cup, he took 14 wickets at an average of 12.43 and an economy of 6.21. He struck once every 12 balls. In the IPL, he has only three wickets in 11 matches, with his average rising to 116.33 and his strike rate stretching to 82 balls per wicket.

Mumbai can live with some bowlers leaking runs if Bumrah is taking wickets. They cannot live with Bumrah being reduced to only a containment option. His economy of 8.51 is still better than most MI seamers, but that is not the standard he sets. MI use him to close innings, break partnerships and force opposition batters into caution. This season, the fear factor has been missing. The wickets have dried up, and Mumbai’s bowling has looked ordinary without his usual bite.

Hardik Pandya’s season has added another layer to that collapse. He was one of India’s important all-round pieces at the World Cup, the kind of cricketer who gives a side batting depth, important seam overs and high-pressure utility. For MI, the return has been narrow. He has 146 runs in eight innings with a highest score of 40. With the ball, he has four wickets at an average of 61.50 and an economy of 11.90.

Those numbers become heavier because Hardik is also the captain of the Mumbai Indians. A specialist batter can have a lean season and still remain one part of a wider problem. But a captain-all-rounder disrupts the team balance - if he does not score enough, the finishing weakens. If his overs are expensive, the bowling structure bends. If the team loses, every decision sits under the same glare.

Will Jacks completes the MI angle. His World Cup numbers made him one of the most attractive multi-skill players in the format: 226 runs at a strike rate of 176.56, nine wickets, and four Player-of-the-Match awards. That is not a small sample of promise. It is a tournament-winning value.

The IPL has given MI only fragments. Jacks has 67 runs in four matches. His strike rate, 163.41, shows the hitting has not vanished, but the influence has. Four matches have brought no fifty and not a single inning of value to MI. His bowling has been worse: one wicket at an economy of 13.20. A player sold by the idea of two-way impact has not delivered enough in either column.

Overseas stars have also lost their World Cup edge

Tim Seifert is another strong example. His T20 World Cup was built on volume and aggression. He made 326 runs and stood near the top of the run charts. That kind of tournament should have given KKR a ready-made top-order weapon.

The IPL has gone the other way. Seifert’s start for KKR has produced only 26 runs in three innings, including two ducks. The collapse is severe because his World Cup value came from repeated scoring, not one isolated innings. A batter who looked settled in a global tournament has looked rushed and disposable in the IPL.

Marco Jansen’s drop is quieter but still fits the pattern. He had 11 wickets in six World Cup matches and remained a wicket-taking option for South Africa despite going at more than 10 an over. Punjab Kings have not received the same incision. Jansen has six wickets in 10 matches, with his economy rate again close to 10. His batting has not provided enough lower-order value to balance that return either. The left-arm angle, height and bounce remain useful on paper, but the actual match impact has been short.

Markram sits at the softer end of this group. His World Cup gave him runs and captaincy credit with South Africa. His IPL numbers for LSG, 231 runs in 11 matches, are not disastrous. They are simply underwhelming for a player carrying recent leadership weight. LSG’s exit makes that drop feel larger because Markram’s campaign has lacked the authority his World Cup suggested.

The pattern is not about one player losing form. It is about how quickly T20 reputations can be tested again. The World Cup offered compressed drama, clear roles and a short burst of high-value performances. The IPL has demanded repeat proof across weeks of travel, changing surfaces, heavier scrutiny and franchise pressure.

Suryakumar has not matched the authority of a World Cup-winning captain. Bumrah has not matched the control of a tournament-leading bowler. Hardik has not supplied enough all-round value. Jacks has lost his two-skill punch. Seifert has gone from top-order force to early-season failure. Jansen and Markram have slipped from influence to the margins.

So while the World Cup revolved around these superstars, IPL 2026 has turned them into cautionary numbers.

This analysis covers 46 IPL 2026 matches through the available impact-linked ball-by-ball dataset, isolating 702 first-10 batting windows, 5,196 balls and 7,306 runs. A first-10 window means the first 10 legal balls faced by a batter in an innings. Wides and other non-legal deliveries are excluded from the ball count.

Across the dataset, batters have scored at a first-10 strike rate of 140.61. The dot-ball rate is 39.90%, the boundary rate is 20.50%, and the dismissal rate inside the window is 36.47%. These numbers show that the early phase of a batter’s innings has become an active scoring zone. The first 10 balls already carry enough speed, risk, and separation to influence the final shape of the match.

The first 10 balls separate winners from losers

The win-loss split gives the clearest evidence. Winning teams have scored at a first-10 strike rate of 154.15. Losing teams have operated at 129.24. The gap is nearly 25 runs per 100 balls. That difference appears before many batters have even reached double figures in balls faced.

The dot-ball split adds another layer. Winning teams have a first-10 dot-ball rate of 36.44%. Losing teams are at 42.58%. Over every 10-ball entry window, losing sides are almost giving away one extra dot ball. In a season of inflated totals, that is a hidden tax on the innings.

Boundary access follows the same pattern. Winning teams have hit boundaries in 22.73% of the first 10 balls. Losing teams have managed 18.65%. The stronger sides are finding release earlier, which prevents pressure from transferring to the next batter.

The wicket cost is sharper. Winning teams lose a batter inside the first 10 balls in 26.62% of windows. Losing teams do so in 43.77%. The best batting sides are getting faster starts with fewer early dismissals. That combination explains why this metric carries more value than raw strike rate.

The first 10 balls are therefore measuring two things at once: immediate tempo and early survival. A batter who scores fast but falls too often creates volatility. A batter who survives but scores too slowly leaves the innings behind the required speed. The ideal player gives his team early movement without early damage.

20-run threshold is the hidden line

The impact layer, measured through our model, shows a hard break between meaningful early acceleration and low-value entry. There are 90 first-10 windows where a batter scored 20 or more. Those windows have produced a win rate of 58.89%. The average batting impact in those cases, according to the model, is 57.42.

The under-10 group tells the other side of the story. There are 343 first-10 windows with 10 or fewer runs. Their win rate is 32.07%. The model’s average batting impact is 2.18. That is the cleanest analytical line in the study. A batter reaching 20 inside his first 10 balls usually gives the innings immediate value. A batter staying under 10 often leaves behind low-scoring output, high pressure, or a higher chance of dismissal.

The difference is too wide to be treated as a style preference. The 20-plus group is associated with winning, high impact and immediate innings control. The under-10 group is associated with low impact and poor match conversion.

Priyansh Arya the most violent

Priyansh Arya is the most extreme first-10 batter in the qualified group. His first-10 strike rate is 252.17. He averages 21.75 runs in the window, with a boundary rate of 43.48%, and a six rate of 21.73%. His phase-adjusted first-10 value is +74.20 runs. The scale of his early hitting is unusual even in a high-scoring season. Almost one in every two balls he faces in the window becomes a boundary. More than one in every five balls becomes a six. He has crossed 20 inside his first 10 balls in 62.5% of his innings.

The risk is visible. His dismissal rate inside the first 10 balls is 37.5%. That does not weaken the argument. It defines the asset. Priyansh is the clearest high-volatility, high-upside first-10 batter in the tournament. His 39 off his first 10 balls against CSK is the strongest single burst in the dataset.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi brings violence with lower early cost

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi sits close to Priyansh in the violence bracket and carries a cleaner survival profile. His first-10 strike rate is 233.73. His average first-10 score is 19.40, with a boundary rate of 44.58%, slightly higher than Priyansh’s. His six rate is 18.07%. His phase-adjusted first-10 value is +73.95 runs. The dismissal rate separates the two profiles. Sooryavanshi is dismissed inside his first 10 balls in only 20% of his windows. Priyansh produces slightly higher immediate output. Sooryavanshi combines similar early force with a lower failure rate.

That makes his profile especially valuable. He gives Rajasthan one of the cleanest entry-speed profiles in the season: high boundary access, high strike rate, high phase-adjusted value and limited early dismissal damage. In a tournament where winning teams are striking at 154.15 in the first 10 windows, Sooryavanshi’s 233.73 places him far beyond the required pace. His value lies in the gap between his acceleration and his wicket cost.

Kohli is the controlled premium version

Virat Kohli is the most revealing name in this study because he is generally not associated with attacking recklessly from the start. His T20 value has usually been linked with control, innings construction, tempo management and acceleration after entry.

IPL 2026 has produced a sharper first-10 profile. Kohli’s first-10 strike rate is 174.44. His dot-ball rate is 27.78%. His boundary rate is 30%, while his dismissal rate inside the first 10 balls is 0%. He has reached 15 or more in his first 10 balls in 77.78% of his innings. That is elite early efficiency. He is scoring well above the league first-10 average of 140.61 and above the winning-team average of 154.15. He is doing it without an early dismissal in the sample.

By our impact model, his average batting impact is 46.3. The first-10 data explain part of that value. He is not allowing the innings to pause when he enters. He is also not exposing RCB to early wicket loss while accelerating. Priyansh and Sooryavanshi represent the explosive edge of the metric. Kohli represents the controlled premium version. The output is fast, repeatable and low-risk.

PBKS and RCB are winning the entry-speed economy

The team numbers show why the first-10 test belongs in a season-level conversation. PBKS lead the league with a first-10 strike rate of 164.7 and a phase-adjusted first-10 value of +111.9. Their batting impact by our model is 1850.2. RCB are close behind with a first-10 strike rate of 159.2, a phase-adjusted first-10 value of +101.2, and a batting impact of 1812.3 by the model.

RR sit in the next band with a first-10 strike rate of 152.18 and a phase-adjusted value of +65.11. GT are at 144.00. CSK and SRH are close to neutral, with phase-adjusted first-10 values of +9.81 and +9.28, respectively. The bottom half exposes the cost of slow entry. MI are at -27.05 phase-adjusted first-10 value. DC are at -75.93. KKR are at -95.31. LSG are at -119.71.

The team pattern is direct. PBKS and RCB are creating immediate batting value at entry. LSG, KKR and DC are losing ground before their innings fully develop. There is also a match-count caveat. The study covers 46 matches. PBKS have played nine matches, but have first-10 batting windows from eight because the abandoned KKR-PBKS match had only KKR batting. RCB, SRH, RR, GT, CSK, DC, KKR, MI, and LSG have been counted based on the available batting windows in the dataset.

Middle order feeling the squeeze

The position split explains why teams are leaning so heavily on openers and early hitters. Openers have scored at a first-10 strike rate of 160.00. No. 3 and No. 4 batters are at 140.00. Nos. 5 to 7 drop to 131.55. Nos. 8 to 11 are at 115.75. This creates a structural problem. If openers fail, many teams are asking middle-order players to restart innings at a lower first-10 tempo. In a season where winning teams are operating at 154.15 in the first-10 window, a middle-order entry rate near 131 creates immediate pressure.

The issue becomes sharper when individual names are studied. Nicholas Pooran has a first-10 strike rate of 72.06 and a phase-adjusted first-10 value of -44.36. Sameer Rizvi is at 79.55 with -27.56. Rishabh Pant is at 107.46 with -23.93. Tilak Varma is at 109.84 with -18.63. These figures are not complete judgments on batting quality. They measure entry cost. Some batters can recover after a slow start. Others leave the innings permanently behind the required pace. IPL 2026 is making that distinction expensive.

The converter group keeps the metric honest

The first-10 test cannot become a blind strike-rate ranking. Some batters absorb a small entry cost and then produce strong innings value. Heinrich Klaasen has a first-10 strike rate of 138.8, yet his average batting impact by our model is 49.2. KL Rahul has a first-10 strike rate of 147.8 and a batting impact of 43.4. Shreyas Iyer is at 135.5 with a batting impact of 46.5. Sai Sudarshan is at 123.3 with a batting impact of 33.9.

This group separates slow entry from failed entry. Klaasen, Rahul and Shreyas can still convert after the first 10 balls. Sudarshan’s profile shows a more classical accumulation route, though his first-10 pace falls short of the winning-team benchmark. The danger arrives when low first-10 output is followed by low final impact. The model does not punish every quiet start equally. It punishes quiet starts that do not compound later.

The first 10 balls have become a market signal

The strongest evidence comes from the combined reading of scoring, dismissal and impact data. The league’s first-10 strike rate is 140.61. Winning teams are at 154.15. Losing teams are at 129.24. The boundary rate for winners is 22.73%, compared to 18.65% for losers. The dismissal rate for winners is 26.62%, compared to 43.77% for losers.

The impact split strengthens the conclusion. First-10 windows of 20 or more runs have a win rate of 58.89% and an average batting impact of 57.42 by our model. Under-10 windows have a win rate of 32.07% and an average batting impact of 2.18. Priyansh and Sooryavanshi define the violent end of the trend. Kohli defines the controlled premium end. PBKS and RCB show the team-level value of fast entry. LSG, KKR and DC show the cost of delayed scoring.

IPL 2026 has made the first 10 balls a live valuation event. Every new batter arrives with a price on tempo. Some raise it quickly. Some leave the innings poorer before they are even set.

This analysis is based on ball-by-ball and impact-linked data from 46 IPL 2026 matches, covering 702 regulation first-10 batting windows, 5,196 balls and 7,306 runs. A first-10 window means the first 10 legal balls faced by a batter in an innings. Wides and other non-legal deliveries were excluded from the ball count. Super-over data was excluded. Impact references are based on a cricket impact model developed by the author. The model studies batting, bowling, fielding, match situation, phase pressure, role difficulty, manual performance rating and captaincy impact, then converts performances into impact values. It is not an official IPL metric, salary calculation or franchise accounting figure.

Their advantage sits deeper: batting spread, phase control and conversion. PBKS have created a scoring structure that keeps working from the powerplay to the death overs, making them more dangerous than teams with cleaner individual leaders.

Structure > Superstar

The points table is just the starting point, not the full explanation. Punjab Kings being at the top after 38 matches tells us they have converted their strengths better than the rest. The more important question is how they have done it.

The answer is batting spread. PBKS have not needed one batter to own the run-chart because their scoring has arrived in layers. Priyansh Arya has given them early acceleration. Prabhsimran Singh has supplied top-order muscle. Shreyas Iyer has added a rare combination of average, tempo and leadership. Their batting order has not been built around one batter absorbing pressure while the rest orbit him.

T20 cricket punishes single-point dependency. A team can have the season’s best individual batter and still lose if the rest of the batting unit collapses around him. PBKS have avoided that pattern better than most sides so far. Their batting is effective across phases. They have had powerplay thrust, middle-over continuity and death-over finishing. This is why their table position makes sense even without an Orange Cap leader. A normal leaderboard might miss that. A phase-led reading does not.

Efficiency needs perspective

Strike rate remains the loudest batting number in T20 cricket. It is also one of the easiest numbers to misuse. A batter scoring at 210 is not automatically more efficient than one scoring at 185 if the first batter has a much weaker average or lower match responsibility. T20 efficiency has to combine four things: runs, strike rate, average and role. That is why the strongest batting-efficiency case after 38 matches belongs to Abhishek Sharma.

Abhishek Sharma led the run chart with 380 runs and did it at a strike rate above 212. That is the rare combination. He has not merely scored quickly, but scored quickly across enough volume to shape Sunrisers Hyderabad’s season. That separates him from smaller-sample hitters.

A short burst can create a glamorous strike rate. Sustained high-speed volume is different. It forces opposition plans to change across matches, not just across overs. Abhishek’s value sits in that repeatability. He has given SRH both a ceiling and consistency. That is why he stands at the top of the batting-efficiency argument.

The biggest damage engine

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s numbers demand a different label. He is the most destructive batter of the season so far. His 357 runs at a strike rate above 234 have stretched the scale of what normal acceleration looks like. He does not just score quickly. He compresses innings. For Rajasthan Royals, that has enormous tactical value. A batter striking at that rate changes how opponents use their best bowlers. Captains are forced to defend earlier. Bowlers lose their margin. Field settings become reactive.

But destruction and complete efficiency are not identical. Abhishek has a stronger volume-plus-run-chart case. KL Rahul has a stronger stability-speed case. Vaibhav’s edge is pure damage. That is still an elite category. In fact, it may be the most frightening category for opposition teams. But the distinction matters. He is the most explosive batter in the league. Abhishek remains the stronger all-round efficiency pick.

Stability still matters

KL Rahul’s season is important because it stops the analysis from becoming only about strike-rate extremes. His 357 runs at a strike rate close to 188 (till match 38) are high-class T20 numbers. In most seasons, that strike rate would be viewed as elite aggression. In IPL 2026, it risks being made to look ordinary because Abhishek and Vaibhav have pushed the top end so far. But considering it ordinary would be a mistake.

Rahul has carried major batting responsibility for the Delhi Capitals. His value comes from the blend: volume, control and pace. He has not been a slow anchor. He has been a high-output batter operating with stability. DC have not had the same batting spread as PBKS or SRH. In a less stable batting unit, a player who can make big runs at nearly 188 becomes structurally vital.

Efficiency is not only about how quickly a batter scores in his best 20 balls. It is also about how often he gives his team a usable innings without dragging the scoring rate down. Rahul clears that test.

Orange Cap doesn’t mean ‘Best Batter’

The top run band after 38 matches gives five different batting stories.

• Abhishek Sharma has explosive volume.

• KL Rahul has high-speed stability.

• Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has extreme acceleration.

• Heinrich Klaasen has middle-overs force.

• Shubman Gill has control and repeatability.

A simple run chart cannot separate those roles. It can only show volume. That is why a proper efficiency reading must ask how the runs were made. Top-order runs are not the same as finishing runs. A 45 off 22 in the powerplay has a different tactical effect from 45 off 22 at the death. A 70 that holds together a weak batting card may be more valuable than a faster cameo in a dominant batting unit.

This is also why PBKS are such an important team in this analysis. Their batting strength is not concentrated in one Orange Cap candidate. It is distributed across roles. That distribution has made them harder to plan against. Stop one batter, and another phase still survives. That is a stronger league-stage model than dependence on one runaway scorer.

Bowling efficiency isn’t ‘Purple Cap’ either

The same logic applies to bowling. After 38 matches, Anshul Kamboj and Eshan Malinga were at the top end of the wicket race with 14 wickets each. Jofra Archer, Prince Yadav and Kagiso Rabada were also in the leading group. The wicket chart matters. It always will. Wickets are the biggest currency in T20 cricket because they break intent, expose new batters, and shift the resource pressure. But wickets alone do not decide bowling efficiency.

A bowler taking 14 wickets while going at 9.4 an over is not offering the same value as a bowler taking 13 wickets while operating around eight an over. Both are valuable. They are not the same kind of valuable. That is where Jofra Archer and Prince Yadav become important. They sit in the high-volume wicket-taking group while also offering stronger economy control. Kamboj’s wicket volume gives him the lead in the wicket story. Archer and Prince press harder in the efficiency story.

Malinga’s case is slightly different. He has clear wicket-taking value and pressure impact, but his economy drag has to be factored in. Ignoring that would be the same mistake as judging a batter only by strike rate.

Shreyas Iyer has the strongest captaincy case

Captaincy has to be judged separately from player performance, but it cannot be detached from results. That is why Shreyas Iyer has the strongest captaincy case after 38 matches. Punjab Kings are at the top. His own batting has added real value. His leadership rating sits in the top tier. The team’s strongest identity, its batting structure, has operated with clarity under him.

That creates a cleaner captaincy argument than a raw leadership score alone.

Rajat Patidar also belongs in the top conversation. His batting tempo and captaincy value have helped RCB stay in the leading group. Ishan Kishan deserves credit for SRH’s all-round strength. But Iyer’s case is backed by the table in a way the others cannot fully match. One particular correction is important because captaincy should not cover poor player performance too easily. A captain can have strong tactical games and still not be the best captain-player package if his own contribution is weak. Leadership adds value. It does not erase batting or bowling failure.

The corrected team picture

The strongest team by results and batting structure is the Punjab Kings. The strongest all-round profile belongs to Sunrisers Hyderabad. They have the top run-scorer in Abhishek, a major middle-order force through Klaasen, and wicket-taking value through Malinga. Rajasthan Royals carry the most destructive batting weapon in Vaibhav and a strong bowling spine through Archer and their spin options.

RCB remain in the top group because their batting has enough late-overs punch, and Patidar’s captaincy-player value keeps them competitive. GT look steady rather than explosive, built around Gill’s control and a bowling group with wicket-taking ability. KKR have fielding quality and clutch value, but their position shows those strengths have not yet become a complete campaign.

CSK have Kamboj’s wicket-taking season but need more collective force. DC have Rahul’s runs but not enough batting spread. MI and LSG have had individual pockets of value, but not enough conversion. That hierarchy is important because it separates component strength from team strength. Some sides have excellent pieces. PBKS have built the best working machine so far.

The efficiency verdict

The first 38 matches of IPL 2026 have made one point clear: efficiency cannot be read from one column. Abhishek Sharma is the best case for batting efficiency because he combines volume and extreme scoring speed. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is the most destructive because his strike rate has changed the scale of acceleration. KL Rahul remains one of the most valuable because his runs combine pace with stability. Anshul Kamboj leads the wicket story, but Jofra Archer and Prince Yadav strengthen the bowling-efficiency debate through economy control. And Shreyas Iyer has the strongest captaincy case because performance, leadership and the points table are aligned.

Punjab Kings are the centre of the season’s first major data lesson. They are not the top because they dominate every individual leaderboard. They are at the top because their batting efficiency has become team efficiency.

Sachin Tendulkar turns 53 on 24 April 2026. That calls for a tribute to the great man. It also makes for a good audit. Not another retelling of beauty, longevity, reverence, but a sharper examination of how much of India’s batting actually rested on him, and how much of the old criticism around his hundreds survives serious scrutiny.

The story of Sachin Tendulkar is often told through volume alone. That is only half the picture. The more revealing question is not only how many runs he made, but how far ahead he was of the next Indian batter, how large a share of India’s run-scoring he occupied, and how often the innings seemed to lose shape once he got out. Those are the measures that turn admiration into evidence.

The 1990s numbers show the gap, not just the greatness

In ODI cricket between 1990 and 1999, Tendulkar scored 8,571 runs in 228 matches at an average of 43.07 with 24 hundreds. Mohammad Azharuddin, India’s next-highest ODI run-scorer of the decade, made 6,858 runs in 225 matches at 39.87, with just five hundreds. This shows a gap of 1,713 runs between India’s top two ODI run-makers of the decade. In an era before totals ballooned and white-ball cricket became a power game, that gap is more than substantial. It shows that Sachin wasn’t just India’s best batter in the format, but its clear centre of gravity.

The Test numbers paint a similar picture. Tendulkar scored 5,626 runs from 69 Tests in the 1990s at an average of 58, with 22 hundreds. Azharuddin, again the next Indian in that period, made 3,880 runs in 64 Tests at an average of 44.09, with 14 hundreds. The gap here is even larger—1,746 runs. This removes the temptation to frame Tendulkar’s dominance as a one-format story. India’s leading Test and ODI batter of the 1990s were the same cricketer, and in both formats, Tendulkar finished comfortably ahead of the next Indian.

That two-format burden is what gives that decade its particular shape. Later, India would have strong batting ecosystems, deeper cores and more stable support around the marquee name. In the 1990s, Tendulkar was not operating inside that kind of a structure. He was the structure. The distance to the next Indian batter in both formats reflects it more than nostalgia.

ODI share puts the volume inside team context

Another layer makes the ODI case stronger. Tendulkar scored 18,426 runs, or 19.24% of the India runs scored off the bat, in the ODI matches he played across his career. After he was made to open the batting in March of 1994, it rose to 16,668 out of 83,008 runs, or 20.08%. Sourav Ganguly, considered one of Tendulkar’s closest competitors during this period in ODIs, scored 17.61% of the runs in the matches he played. That doesn’t make Tendulkar unmatched across all ODI history, but it does show how much of India’s scoring he occupied. This wasn’t abstract accumulation; it was a sizeable share of team output.

The comparison becomes more useful when Sachin is measured against modern Indian greats as well. Virat Kohli’s ODI share of India’s runs is 18.82%. Tendulkar’s career figure of 19.24% is higher, and his post-1994 figure of 20.08% sits further ahead. That does not settle every comparison, and it should not be stretched to do so. However, it does reinforce the basic argument: in one-day cricket, Tendulkar was not merely prolific. He occupied an unusually large portion of India’s scoring, even by the standards of elite Indian batters.

This is also where the angle becomes more precise than a generic claim of greatness. A reader does not need to be told that Tendulkar made a lot of runs. What is more revealing is that the gap between his share and Ganguly’s share was 2.47 percentage points during his opener phase, and that his overall career share was still above Kohli’s.

The stats establish the pattern. Certain matches explain why that pattern became an emotional memory. The 1996 World Cup semifinal at Eden Gardens remains one of the clearest examples. Sri Lanka made 251 for 8. India, chasing 252 runs, were 98 for 2 when Tendulkar was dismissed for 65. What happened next may be described best as a collapse in fast-forward, as India were soon 120 for 8. That match was eventually awarded to Sri Lanka after crowd ruckus, but the scorecard had already delivered the essential message. Once Tendulkar left, the innings lost shape and balance almost immediately.

Battling severe back pain, Tendulkar dragged India back into the contest with a magnificent 136. At 254 for 6, with just 17 needed, he fell. Instead of finishing it off, India collapsed to 259 all out, losing by 12 runs. Those who watched it live still carry the pain; others can only imagine it, as the last three wickets fell for just four runs.

Busting the age-old myth

This is where the birthday tribute needs to correct one of the laziest cliches attached to Tendulkar’s career. The maxim that he kept making hundreds only for India to lose survives because some defeats were dramatic and memorable. But here’s the kicker. Of Tendulkar’s 49 ODI hundreds, India won 33, lost 14, tied one and had one no-result. That means India won roughly two out of every three ODIs in which he made a century. The Test picture is naturally more mixed because the draws complicate the format, but even then, the caricature breaks down on contact. India won 20 out of Tendulkar’s 51 Test hundreds, lost 11 and drew 20. That is the record of a batter whose biggest defeats became folklore and gradually distorted the whole.

This correction matters in this tribute because the easiest versions of Tendulkar’s legacy are also the least useful. One says he was great because he made many runs. The other says he was overpraised because those runs often came in losses. Neither is good enough. The better reading is harder. In the 1990s, Tendulkar carried an unusually heavy load for India across formats, and the famous defeats attached to his career were memorable because so much of the innings rested on him.

Sachin Tendulkar does not need exaggeration

IPL 2026 has made one thing impossible to ignore. The tournament feels quicker, less patient, and more than willing to hand over to younger batters than the league’s old rhythms would normally allow. New names are not just appearing. They are arriving with a licence. They are scoring before the game settles, and often before reputation can slow them down.

But that is exactly where this season becomes more interesting than the easy headlines. Because when the numbers from IPL 2023 to IPL 2026 are placed side by side, they do not say the league has suddenly become a playground for kids. They say something sharper. The IPL is getting faster every year, and a growing share of that speed is moving toward younger and younger-prime batters, even while the bulk of total runs still remains with the established stars.

The first change is in the speed of the league itself

The broadest trend is clear enough to start there. In the serious batting sample built from players with at least 100 balls across IPL 2023 to 2025, the overall batting strike rate stood at 141.73 in 2023. It jumped to 150.59 in 2024 and then rose again to 152.07 in 2025. Through Match 20 of IPL 2026, the batting strike rate sits at 150.37, while the overall scoring strike rate is 158.29, and the season run rate stands at 9.50.

Why the age question matters

This is why the age debate is worth having in the first place. IPL 2026 has not merely produced more runs. It has produced the feeling that younger batters are no longer waiting quietly for their turn. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Ayush Mhatre, Sameer Rizvi and Mukul Choudhary have given the season fresh energy. Yashasvi Jaiswal, Dhruv Jurel and Abhishek Sharma belong to a slightly older but equally important part of the same movement. The common thread is not just age. It is intent.

Still, seasons can trick the eye. A few breakouts can create an illusion of total takeover. That is why the only useful way to judge this is over multiple years. Once the 2023-25 historical base is brought in, with 2026 added as the live layer, the picture becomes far more credible. The question is no longer whether some young players are doing well. The question is whether a larger share of the league’s tempo is actually shifting younger. The numbers say yes.

The youngsters are playing faster for longer

Across IPL 2023 to 2025, the Under-26 group increased its share of total runs from 30.2% in 2023 to 33.4% in 2024 and then 35.9% in 2025. Its share of balls faced moved almost in lockstep, rising from 30.1% to 32.9%, then to 35.3%. That shows the younger side is not only scoring quickly in cameos, but also that It’s being trusted with more of the innings.

And when that group does bat, it is doing so at increasing speed. The Under-26 strike rate climbed from 145.84 in 2023 to 155.04 in 2024, then to 157.11 in 2025. This is one of the strongest signs in the entire analysis. The younger side is taking more of the batting opportunities and converting them into quicker runs.

The sharpest version of that trend appears in the “quick-damage” category. Under-26 batters accounted for 30.0% of all 30-plus scores made at 150-plus strike rate in 2023. That rose to 36.5% in 2024 and then to 39.3% in 2025. A larger slice of IPL’s fast, match-shaping knocks is now coming from the younger side of the batting pool.

That is not a slogan. That is the backbone of the argument.

The old stars still own a huge part of the scoreboard

This is where the piece becomes more honest than the usual generational chest-thumping. Even as the younger side gains more of the league’s fast batting, the Over-30 group still controls the biggest chunk of total output. Across IPL 2023 to 2025, Over-30 batters accounted for 45.6% of runs in 2023, 47.1% in 2024 and 48.0% in 2025. Their share of balls faced also rose from 46.0% to 47.4% and then to 49.0%.

That means the old guard has not been shoved out of the game’s centre. Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Jos Buttler, Heinrich Klaasen, Sanju Samson, Shreyas Iyer and others still sit deep inside the batting economy. Even their strike rates stayed healthy at 143.78, 151.83 and 151.22 across those three seasons.

This is why the story cannot be framed as “youngsters have taken over the IPL”. That would be lazy and unsupported. The better reading is that the scoreboard still has older ownership, but the league’s speed map is ageing downward.

The younger-prime, not just teenagers

Once the player pool is split more finely, the trend becomes even more interesting. The strongest shift is not toward children storming the league on their own. It is toward the younger-prime zone. When the serious batting pool is broken into 20 and under, 21-23, 24-26, 27-29, 30-32, 33-35 and 36-plus, the key movement happens around 24-26.

In 2025, the 24-26 age band became the single biggest run-share group in the serious sample. That is a major clue. It tells us the IPL is not becoming teenage cricket so much as becoming earlier-prime cricket. The next generation is not only arriving. It is maturing faster into the centre of the batting economy.

That is a much stronger line than a simple youth-wave cliché. It explains why the season feels younger without requiring the data to pretend veterans are irrelevant. The real change is that the younger-prime band is beginning to carry more of the tournament’s batting force.

IPL 2026 has made the pattern easier to see

The live season supports that historical trend rather than disrupting it. In the age-covered 2026 sample through Match 20, Under-26 batters account for 37.9% of runs and 36.4% of balls, at a strike rate of 156.29 and an average of 37.51. Over-30 batters still account for 42.5% of runs and 43.1% of balls, but at a lower strike rate of 147.77 and an average of 32.65.

That split says almost everything the season is trying to say. The older group still holds the bigger slice of total volume. But the younger side is scoring faster and, in this season, posting stronger averages as well. It is not full ownership yet. It is rising influence over how the game is played.

The finer age split sharpens it further. In the covered 2026 sample, the 24-26 group accounts for 33.4% of runs, 31.9% of balls and a strike rate of 157.13. That is not a fringe cluster. It is the live engine room of the season. It is the clearest proof yet that the centre of gravity in IPL batting is moving toward the younger-prime bracket.

This is also a team-structure story

The age shift is only part of the picture. IPL 2026 has also shown that raw aggression alone is not enough. The teams making the strongest batting impressions are not merely the noisiest. They are the ones combining pace with shape.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru have scored 894 runs in four matches at a run rate of 11.18. Rajasthan Royals have looked like one of the cleanest embodiments of the season’s new batting order, combining pace with lower wicket damage and efficient tactical use. Gujarat Titans, in a different way, have shown how managed tempo through phases can still be decisive.

The lesson from the season is not that one great powerplay or one freak finisher is enough. Teams now need innings that stay alive without surrendering tempo in the middle. That is what makes this shift more serious than a few flashy highlights. The IPL is not only getting faster. It is getting structurally harsher. There is less room for drift inside an innings, and more value in batting units that can attack without losing shape.

What has changed, and what has not

The easiest version of this story would be to say the kids are here and the old stars are done. The data does not say that. What it says is better.

Older greatness still matters. Established stars still own a huge share of total runs. But a bigger share of the league’s fast batting, its quick-damage innings and its live tempo now sits with younger and younger-prime batters. More innings are being shaped by that side of the age curve, even before the full scoreboard has shifted with it.

That is why IPL 2026 feels different. Not because experience has vanished, but because speed has started to migrate. The future has not fully replaced the present. But it has moved out of the waiting room. The scoreboard still belongs, in large part, to the old stars. The pace increasingly does not.
